On a tight budget? Introduce your children to the wonder of growing the family groceries and preparing simple recipes with the fruit of their labors.

Whether planting in the free (and sometimes unusual) containers suggested in Onions in My Boots or planting in the ground, your investment will be negligible*, but the rewards—priceless.

From gardening projects in this book, children will learn:

  • Goal-setting
  • Decision-making
  • How to follow through on a project
  • Patience
  • Our Creator’s amazing plans and providence!

*If your first thought is, “Oh, no; how much is this hobby going to cost?” be reassured that this little book shows beginners how to garden “on the cheap.” (Gardening is one of the few hobbies that pays you to have fun.) In fact, depending on what you want to plant, you may not even have to buy seeds!

Nancy Nicholson is one of the founding authors of Catholic Heritage Curricula. Equipped with an abundance of God-given talent, a major in Secondary Education–English, and years of experience homeschooling her own children, she has written over thirty educational titles, beginning with Little Stories for Little Folks. Her unique ability to develop programs and workbooks that “fit” both advanced and struggling students is due to her experience raising children of different ability levels and learning styles: two of her children are developmentally challenged, while another went on to graduate from Harvard and is now a college professor.

This colorful worktext combines guided Nature Walks, bite-sized science facts, engaging video clips, nature read-alouds, and coloring pages into a foundational science program that holds a child’s interest as he explores the wonders of God’s creation.

  • Nature Walks: Guided Nature Walks provide the hands-on encounter with God’s creation that is so essential at this age level. Including:
    • Twenty-four unique “Nature Walk Take-Along Sheets” to encourage observation and discovery. (Some of the objects/creatures might not be found in your area, but the sheets also include items that can be located anywhere, such as rocks, leaves, and twigs.)
    • Rainy Day Activities for times when you can’t go on a Nature Walk.
  • Science Facts: Each week’s “Creature Feature” or “Nature Feature” exposes the student to scientific methods of categorization, through:
    • The anatomy and behavior of a new animal or plant
    • Creatures that share characteristics with the “featured creature”
  • Creature Clips: Engaging video clips that demonstrate or expand upon the science facts are recommended for almost every lesson.
  • Nature Read-Alouds: A list of fiction and non-fiction books, organized by unit and week, makes it easy to check out read-aloud titles from the library that are related to the nature topic of the week.

Recommended for kindergarten. A daily schedule for this program is available in CHC Lesson Plans for Kindergarten.

Maria Johnson, B.A., grew up with her six siblings in the pine-treed foothills of Northern California. She was homeschooled from kindergarten through high school and graduated summa cum laude from the University of Dallas with a focus in Pre-Med and History. Maria’s science background gives a unique perspective to her research and writing, and Nature Walks are still one of her favorite pastimes.

Our son is thoroughly enjoying this science text, and so am I! The information is presented at his level of understanding, and so are the hands-on projects. The projects are easy to plan ahead for, and he is excited about doing them.

I have been very impressed with Behold and See 1. It is very colorful, easy to read and "gentle" – not overstimulating. My son has also enjoyed the projects, especially growing and measuring vegetables. What a joy to have these God-filled books for our children to learn from!!!!

Behold and See Science 1 is just what my 1st grader needed. There is just no more simple and innocent way to experience God's world and discover science than on a farm. Taking the trip with you are two sweet children, Josh and Hanna. It is just enough science without weighing it down, but enough to explore some wonderful concepts. The activities are age appropriate and very easy without much preparation.

Photo submitted by Jessica, NY.

My daughter was drawn to Behold and See 1 right from the start of the school year. It includes God's simple wonders which are too often overlooked.

I love Behold and See Science 2. The lessons are written in a manner that is age appropriate but yet a little challenging to stretch their little minds. I have been homeschooling for 18 years and have never found it so easy, complete and enjoyable as I have since using CHC.

"My son was so excited to make this fun edible model of the layers of the earth!" —Margaret, NY

Behold and See Science 2 was the first subject every day that my son wanted to tackle. He has learned a great deal and also had his curiosity and love of learning nurtured. His favorite part was the hands-on experiments. Mom also liked the experiments, because they were fairly easy to prepare for and complete at home.

Photos submitted by Katie, TX.

My 6-year-old son and I have enjoyed Behold and See 2. It has opened up discussion for us in many areas. This is one book he asks for me to read....without balking!

“My son and his granddad made the model of the earth’s layers.”—Danielle, TN

My son especially enjoys Behold and See 2. It is written in an easy-to-understand way with lots of rich pictures and activities.

"My daughter loved doing this volcano. She had to dress up like a scientist too! Great fun!" —Margaret, NY

Behold and See 2 is engaging and readable, and I love how it combines teaching stewardship of God's creation with solid science. Our one complaint is that it leaves both my student and me wanting more…

Photos submitted by Maureen, MO.

My son spent the evening with the experiments from Behold and See 2, discovering how levers and inclined planes (and wheels) can make our work easier.

“First science experiment of the year!” —Mary, RI

Thank you for Behold and See Science 3. This is our 13th year of homeschooling. It is the first time I have ever seen science experiments that 1) make sense and 2) really work!

Photo submitted by Julianne, NY.

This “textbook” reads like a living book. The pictures were beautiful and instructive. My son had no problem reading the text to himself (he is 8), following through with the experiments or projects, and answering questions/taking tests.

"My kids are viewing the Behold and See 3 book while comparing to nature in our yard." —Lisa, SC

We have searched and used any number of science texts and have never had the ease of use, the beauty and the thoroughness of Behold and See Science 3. We are actually using it for all of our elementary age children. The experiments captivate the youngest while they reawaken a wonder in the oldest that was killed with dry, old or outdated texts.

Photo submitted by Mary, LA.

I just wanted to say how much I have enjoyed the Behold and See 3 science text this year. I love the colorful pages and the simple, yet extremely helpful science experiments. They have made our year so much more interesting than just reading a text.

Photo submitted by Bernadette, MD.

We had a blast playing the Food Web board game in Behold and See 3! A fun way to think about ecosystems!

Fantastic science experiments and projects! I want to be a homeschooler whose kids do fun and engaging projects and not only book work in science. This text gives students fun activities with materials ACTUALLY found around the house. Other families have been thrilled with our projects and plan to buy this text. After you make the lung and diaphragm model you will know why!

Our kiddos are loving Behold and See 4! We just finished the Skeletal system. We went to our local small town butcher to get a beef femur. They cut it in half for us to check out the diagram in our book. It was the coolest thing…even for mom and dad.

My daughter is 10 and can name the organs and what they do together! (Her older siblings have made this Human Body Felt Project but hers is the best 😁)

My daughter completed "Planning a Healthy Meal" from Behold & See 4 and we are serving the meal tonight to celebrate the feast of the Presentation of our Lord.

“Enjoying the ‘Floating Egg experiment’ from Behold and See 6.” —Jax, FL

I have a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine and thus a rich science background and I have rarely found science texts that are accurate even at the elementary level. Additionally we have the polarizing science vs. religion that is found in almost every text. Thankfully CHC has provided Catholic homeschoolers with accurate and catechetically sound science texts.

“Science is his favorite subject and your books make it fun and interesting!” —Sarah, TX

The best part of Behold and See 5 is that it has turned this science-dreading mom into a confident teacher this year. I love hearing, “MOM, did you know…?” after my 5th grader reads his assignment.

"Behold and See 5 Worm Project. They found 215 worms!" —Diana, NJ

My daughter used Behold & See 5 last year. She really enjoyed science for once! It is the first time she remembered what she was learning and she often would tell the family at dinner interesting facts.

“My son making fossils with shells for his science lesson from Behold & See 5.” —Luzaideth, FL

The Behold and See Science 5 set has been a continual blessing this year. The author has a quirky way of getting us to understand and remember the content. (Yes, Mom too has learned a lot!) Each chapter draws us deeper into the mystery of God’s creation.

“Some fun atmosphere and weather supplemental activities.” —Luzaideth, FL

We are using Behold and See 5 for our 5th grader and LOVING it! It gives great project ideas that do not require much preparation.

"Examining lilies for our 5th grade Science class! Locating filaments, stigmas, anthers, petals and pollen."—Luzaideth, FL

I'm so happy to find a great science textbook that also has a Catholic perspective.
