An Easy-to-Use Literature Program with Hands-On Activities

My First Treasure Trove of Literature introduces students to the rewarding study of literature. This inviting, approachable guide will develop a child’s reading and critical thinking skills, challenge him to think more deeply about virtuous character qualities, and build the foundation for a fruitful, lifelong relationship with good literature. The student will explore three delightful children’s classics:

My First Treasure Trove of Literature includes:

  • Vocabulary
  • Reading comprehension questions
  • Literary elements (character and plot)
  • Literary devices (simile, allusion, onomatopoeia)
  • Weekly questions for individual or group discussion
  • Studies of virtuous character qualities and saintly role models
  • Weekly games, projects, and hands-on activities
  • A final project for each book

Designed for independent study—no prior literary knowledge needed from the parent! To encourage independent study, all instructions are directed to the student.

Removable parent resources include:

  • complete answer key
  • detailed guide to discussion questions

Recommended for students in third grade, or for any student who is reading fluently. Esther Moon, Ph.D., was homeschooled and could usually be found reading a book when she wasn’t building tree forts. On some of her adventures, she explored ancient Egyptian tombs; earned a B.A. in Politics, Philosophy, and Economics; taught Shakespeare in Italy; and completed a Ph.D. in Literature at the University of Dallas in 2022.

RoseMary C. Johnson, Ph.D., was homeschooled with CHC materials from preschool through high school. She graduated summa cum laude from the University of Dallas with a Bachelor’s degree in English and a concentration in Greek. She completed a Ph.D. in Literature at the University of Dallas. RoseMary is the now the General Editor of CHC’s publications, including The Treasure Trove of Literature and Ever Ancient, Ever New: Art History, Appreciation, Theory, and Practice.

Q: Do you offer a single-subject lesson plan for My First Treasure Trove of Literature?

A: Currently, there is no single-subject lesson plan available for My First Treasure Trove of Literature because it is fairly simple to schedule on your own. There is a suggested schedule in the introduction, and it is easy to divide up the lessons into one lesson per day.

Q: Is it all right to use different editions of the literature books?

A: My First Treasure Trove of Literature assigns the reading by chapter, so it’s fine to use a different edition as long as it is unabridged and uses the same translation (i.e., the Sidney Firman translation for Pinocchio).

What Can You Do... may be my favorite CHC book yet! It is absolutely beautiful in its idea of portraying the Corporal Works of Mercy. From a catechism viewpoint, there is no better way to teach children the Works of Mercy than these sweet stories of children fulfilling them. They can relate to them and understand how they can act as well. There is ample room for writing as well as space for drawing pictures to illustrate their story. A beautiful keepsake to be enjoyed over and over!
I love What Can You Do... If you have a reluctant reader or a reluctant writer then this book is the key to your child's mind.

My 6-year-old daughter enjoys this story book and journal rolled in one. It helps her think about others first and more importantly, what she can do for others in her own little way. The stories in What Can You Do... are great in explaining the corporal and spiritual works of mercy to a child by the concrete examples shown by the characters. Even my 10-year-old is curious about his sister's book. We are just about to complete the journal and it looks like a scrapbook of good works already.
When beginning second grade, our son was still a little apprehensive about reading. The small pages and nicely spaced sentences allowed him to read full stories without getting overwhelmed with the number of words on the page. Also, since second grade was a big sacrament year for him, reviewing the Corporal and Spiritual Works of Mercy in stories with other children as the lead characters was great! He was able to relate to the messages in the stories and think about how he could do those things too. He loves reading the stories and thoroughly enjoys writing his own in the journaling pages!

My daughter really enjoyed having a book that she could make her own. She enthusiastically wrote her own journaling after the stories in What Do You Like to Do which significantly improved her writing skills. The stories and sentence starters really motivated her. I greatly appreciate the character-building conversations that were started by this precious book, and it will make a lovely keepsake.

We are thoroughly enjoying What Do You Like to Do. My daughter, in first grade, loves the stories. They are the perfect length for a little lesson. Each of the stories gently and timelessly tells a tale of children enjoying the World God gave them. My daughter is having so much fun writing her own journal as prompted by each story. It now makes a beautiful keepsake journal!

My 7-year-old son was excited when he saw the chapter about a boy fishing and said, "That's me!" It went a long way in enticing him to try to read even though reading is frustrating for him. I was excited about the extra space between lines that makes it easier to read and the grey background that reduces eyestrain for dyslexics and children with sensory problems. Those two features really make it work for children who can not use many standard materials.

Photo submitted by Luzaideth, FL.

My twins are in the first grade and we are very much enjoying What Do You Like to Do. The stories are interesting and entertaining, and my twins love to take turns reading them to Mommy during school. I like the fact that the stories mention Catholic things and ideas here and there, as if they are normal and to be expected. The stories are long enough to actually tell a story, but not too long that the kids get frustrated. And, also very important, I don't get bored hearing the stories read more than once!

Q: Do you offer a single-subject lesson plan for The Treasure Trove of Literature?

A: Currently, there is no single-subject lesson plan available for The Treasure Trove of Literature because it is fairly simple to schedule on your own. There is a suggested schedule in the introduction, and it is easy to divide up the lessons into one lesson per day.

Q: Is it all right to use different editions of the literature books?

A: The Treasure Trove of Literature assigns the reading by chapter as often as possible, so in all but a few instances it doesn’t make a difference what edition you use, so long as it is unabridged.

“My daughter had a great time completing her 3D map of Middle Earth from The Hobbit study in The Treasure Trove of Literature, Level 3 🙂” —Annie, MI

We love the Treasure Trove of Literature books!! They make reading analysis so fun and easy. The end projects are always so fun too. This is my kid's new favorite subject.
We absolutely love the Treasure Trove series. As a parent I was worried about how to teach literature to my children and I can truly say this is a lifesaver. It includes a great variety of the classic books, review questions, and projects and I love how it is separated into very easy and non-overwhelming workload for both parents and students. It has made my stress about teaching this subject nonexistent!
I have been homeschooling my niece and nephew for three years now and they both absolutely LOVE your Treasure Trove of Literature series. They are exceptionally well done, I love the tie-ins to our faith, they teach literature in a wonderful and engaging way, and they make complex concepts very easy to understand for students. It's also exceptionally easy to use from the teacher perspective. Five stars for this series!
I have been homeschooling my 6 kids for 6 years now. This is the absolute best reading curriculum I have ever found!! I've bought and tried probably close to 30 different reading comprehension programs. This one is the most well done and age appropriate that I have ever encountered. If you buy only one thing from Catholic Heritage Curricula, this should be it!
The Treasure Trove of Literature series is our favorite curriculum that my family has used over the years because it not only has comprehension, but also teaches about the book and literary analysis. Thank you for doing this!

Whether used as a Reading Comprehension course or free-time reading, these stories will inspire as they relate the striking, heroic, and challenging lives of the saints.

It is so important to provide both good reading material and the example of the saints to form our children. Teenagers especially need to see and learn from true heroes! Written with 7th- through 12th-graders in mind, these longer stories focus on issues that have new and more personal relevance to children on their way to adulthood: pro-life and the married state, pursuing further studies and discerning a vocation to the religious life, sacrificial love and perseverance, and God’s call to share the gift of Faith with others.

The 20- to 25-page stories in Volume 4 are full of illustrations and photos to bring the narratives to life:

  • To Know Christ Jesus: St. Katharine Drexel
  • A Life Poured Out: Ven. Matt Talbot
  • Always in the Master’s House: St. Josephine Bakhita
  • To Restore All Things in Christ: Pope St. Pius X

Each story is followed by four pages of enriching information and activities, including:

  • Vocabulary and terms to know
  • Comprehension questions
  • Discussion questions
  • Essay questions
  • Quotations for further thought
  • Geography and history
  • Research and report prompts
  • Biography assignment
  • Ideas for practicing the faith of the saints

A daily schedule for this core text is available in CHC Lesson Plans for Eighth Grade.

This is truly a book to inspire and encourage young people on their journey toward God. After reading each of the stories I asked my 12 1/2-year-old son to pick one out to read. Although he's read dozens of biographies on the saints, this is the first biography in a long time that has touched his heart and motivated him to follow God more closely. The author has a remarkable way of writing that draws the reader into the story and stirs their heart to love God more.
My son LOVES all of his reading comprehension. He has learned so much about his faith and the lives of the saints just by reading and doing his daily work. We always have so much to talk about. Thank you for helping us keep the faith and help me to keep my focus on educating my son – and myself – for eternity.
I believe reading all the saint stories has helped my daughter resist a lot of temptations as she is growing into a teenager.

Little Stories for Little Folks is a complete, phonics-based reading program designed to be started in kindergarten and completed in first grade. This “open-and-go” program:

  • maximizes ease-of-use for busy parents;
  • is interesting and enjoyable for young readers;
  • instills a love for our Lord, develops character, and promotes Catholic family life.
Catholic phonics and reading program curriculum

Little Stories for Little Folks includes:

  • Alphabet flashcards printed on stiff cardstock
  • Active games teaching the alphabet, letters, and sound recognition
  • Pre-reading exercises that teach the student to blend sounds into words
  • 45 stories with color illustrations about other homeschool families, foldable from 8½”×11″ sheets to 4-page booklets
  • Parent instruction page before each lesson showing in simple steps how to present each reading exercise, worksheet, and story

These elements are all organized and contained under one cover, making presentation of the lessons simple and stress-free.

Each story is designed to be folded into a little booklet, which gives the child the satisfaction of finishing a “whole book.” By the time the child completes Little Stories for Little Folks in first grade, he will be reading at a second- to third-grade level, at least a full year above grade level.

A daily schedule for this program is available in CHC Lesson Plans for Kindergarten and CHC Lesson Plans for First Grade.

Companion Books:

See also Little Stories for Little Folks’ companion workbooks: Catholic Heritage Handwriting, Level K and Level 1. These workbooks provide story-by-story phonics practice as primary students copy and reinforce letter combinations and words that they have just read in Little Stories for Little Folks. Children master reading skills even more rapidly when using these companion workbooks.

Higher level reading practice is available through the engaging, character-building stories in What Do You Like to Do, What Can You DoBigger Stories for Little Folks, Devotional Stories for Little Folks, and Devotional Stories for Little Folks, Too.

Four basic steps, followed in sequence, lead to fluency in reading.

  1. Letter and Sound Recognition: First, the child masters the names and most common consonant and short vowel sounds of all the letters of the alphabet.

Nancy Nicholson is one of the founding authors of Catholic Heritage Curricula. Equipped with an abundance of God-given talent, a major in Secondary Education–English, and years of experience homeschooling her own children, she has written over thirty educational titles, beginning with Little Stories for Little Folks. Her unique ability to develop programs and workbooks that “fit” both advanced and struggling students is due to her experience raising children of different ability levels and learning styles: two of her children are developmentally challenged, while another went on to graduate from Harvard and is now a college professor.

Q: What reading level will my child be at once he has completed Little Stories?

A: When a student completes all four levels of stories in Little Stories for Little Folks, he is reading at a second- to third-grade level. The majority of children begin Little Stories in kindergarten and finish it in first grade, which means that by the end of the program they are reading a full year above grade level.

Q: I am using CHC Lesson Plans for Kindergarten, which includes a daily schedule for Little Stories. Do I have to follow the schedule in the lesson plan, or can I go more slowly/quickly?

A: Please do proceed through the lessons at your child’s pace, whether that is slower or faster than the schedule laid out in the lesson plans. Children’s literacy skills develop at markedly different rates in the early years. Some children are still sounding out words until they are seven, but then reading suddenly “clicks,” and they rapidly advance to the level of their peers. The key is to proceed at the child’s own pace, rather than pushing a child to keep up with artificial standards or keeping a child from advancing when he is eager to learn more. Remember, in homeschooling there is no such thing as “ahead” or “behind”!

Q: We used a different phonics program for kindergarten. Where do we start in Little Stories for Little Folks?

A: If your child has begun with a different phonics program and is now switching to Little Stories for Little Folks, take a few days to review the concepts at the beginning of Little Stories for Little Folks, following the detailed directions in this article.

Q: Is Little Stories for Little Folks a complete phonics program, or do I need to add a phonics workbook for extra practice?

A: Little Stories for Little Folks and the My Catholic Speller series together provide a complete phonics program. Following the directions given in the readers and spellers ensures that the student will cover all the topics needed for a strong, phonics-based foundation to reading and spelling. Additional phonics reinforcement exercises can be found in Catholic Heritage Handwriting, Level K and Level  1. These exercises are keyed exactly to the phonics lessons taught in Little Stories for Little Folks, providing additional phonics/reading practice.

I was very worried about my ability to teach my daughter to read. However, Little Stories for Little Folks made the process a JOY! Each book had a bite-size lesson which built on the lesson before. It was perfect.

I love everything CHC has to offer regarding English. My background is as an English and reading teacher, and I find your materials to be top-notch, second to none.

“My daughter is really enjoying Little Stories for Little Folks. It all just clicks with her and she is zooming along!” —Kacey, CO

As a first-time homeschooler, I thought teaching to read must be tedious and expensive to be effective. Not only is the content in Little Stories for Little Folks much richer and character-building than the secular boxed-set reader I tried, there are many more different words and many more words overall introduced in CHC's Little Stories than the other popular boxed-set.

“My 5-year-old proudly reading ‘Little Ann’ (level 1 book 9 of Little Stories) to his happy 3-year-old sister!” —Julianne, NY

I had taught four older children to read using another program. Little Stories for Little Folks is much more user-friendly and I didn't need to take a seminar to start it! I am expecting my tenth child early this fall, other mothers should know that this is a program that is doable even for very large families.

“She is reading!!!!!!! It is so cool!!!!!! Can’t stop her now!” —Bernadette, CA

One of my great frustrations is that many early reader books are really not phonetically controlled; they have very few words on a page, but frequently use words with exceptions and complex phonograms. Little Stories is just the opposite —many words on each page, but phonograms used in the words are introduced gradually and progress from simple to complex. In addition, we loved the stories themselves!

Our little one is reading!!!! Oh the excitement that comes when you have taught such an amazing and important skill. She is so excited!!!

Thanks so much for your fantastic reading program, Little Stories for Little Folks. My son was a VERY reluctant reader and has been steadily working through your books for over a year and a half now. In the last few months, he just took off, finished the program and is reading chapter books with ease now. Here is a picture of him reading to one of the twin baby boys. My son is a great multi-tasker 🙂

The 20- to 25-page stories in Volume 3 are full of illustrations and photos to bring the narratives to life:

  • Blessed by The Truth: St. Edith Stein
  • Apostle of Life: St. Gianna Beretta Molla
  • With Grateful Joy: Bl. Francis Seelos
  • Always Go Forward, and Never Turn Back: St. Junipero Serra

Each story is followed by four pages of enriching information and activities, including:

  • Vocabulary and terms to know
  • Comprehension questions
  • Discussion questions
  • Essay questions
  • Quotations for further thought
  • Geography and history
  • Research and report prompts
  • Biography assignment
  • Ideas for practicing the faith of the saints

My son LOVES all of his reading comprehension. He has learned so much about his faith and the lives of the saints just by reading and doing his daily work. We always have so much to talk about. Thank you for helping us keep the faith and help me to keep my focus on educating my son — and myself — for eternity.
Reading Comprehension: Stories of the Saints is far more than just a reading comprehension workbook. This book could be used as a unit study! Alternatively, a saint could be selected each quarter for the child to prayerfully study and to immerse themselves in the saint's life and spirituality. There are enough excellent questions in this book that a child would grow to know the saint and his surroundings on a deep level.
I believe reading all the saint stories has helped my daughter resist a lot of temptations as she is growing into a teenager.
