This art masterpiece collection features 18 paintings of nature scenes. Each painting comes with a short poem for memorization and a detailed picture study that teaches art appreciation.

The 18 art masterpieces in this collection feature engaging nature scenes by artists such as Albert Bierstadt, Thomas Moran, Grant Wood, and Vincent van Gogh. The Nature Collection, composed of Art Prints and a Teaching Booklet, includes:

  • High-quality prints of art masterpieces
  • Paired poems for the student to memorize with each painting
  • Detailed picture studies teaching:
    • Close observation skills
    • A deeper understanding of beauty, composition, color, and line
  • Mini Masterpieces, including two matching activities:
    • Cut-and-paste activity with smaller copies of the featured paintings
    • A second painting by each featured artist teaching artistic style recognition
  • A sample two-week schedule for completing the study in 36 weeks, two sessions per week

Why teach art appreciation?
The experience of beauty in art helps to form the mind and heart to pursue truth and goodness. As Prof. John Crosby has said, “the child who is raised to respond to the beautiful is thereby sensitized to all that is good and right and worthy.” Taking time to expose our children to great art gives them the opportunity “to contemplate the ray of beauty that strikes us to the quick, that almost ‘wounds’ us, and that invites us to rise toward God” (Benedict XVI).

Recommended for ages 7-9.

My sweet boy loves your art programs. REALLY loves it. He was so persistent to keep trying and not give up on sketching the exotic bird in the lesson. He surprised me and went on without my encouragement to color the whole page with a tree! I think I have an artist!
The Art Masterpieces Collections are my absolute favorite. I have not found anything else like these and I want to thank you for creating such a wonderful collection of classical art pieces. I love that the Art Prints are a large enough size to display around our home, even just for fun! They are high quality printings on sturdy paper. I love the way the lessons have the students search for matching prints done by the same artist so that they get an eye for style.

“My daughter loves Sewing with St. Anne and completed her first project, a pin cushion, in just one day!” —Jamie, TX

My daughter and I are enjoying Sewing with St. Anne so much. My daughter really wants to sew and since I am a beginner myself, I needed a book that contained beginner projects with simple and detailed instructions! This book is perfect for our needs and I especially love the beauty of the book! It is filled with lovely illustrations and inspirational quotes. I highly recommend this book!!!

I love how much my 6-year-old daughter loves her sewing 🙂 I do a lesson a week with my younger girls and it’s amazing how excited they are to share what they’re learning with their siblings. She is doing running stitches with a backstitch. She loves it. Sewing with Saint Anne is a hit!
Sewing with St. Anne is the perfect gift for any girl who is interested in learning to sew! Mrs. Cantrell's explanations are easy to follow and the illustrations are beautiful. As an added bonus, she also includes interesting sewing "tidbits" and poems. My 4 girls and I love Sewing with St. Anne!
The book, Sewing with St. Anne, is absolutely beautiful in context and illustrations. The directions are easy to follow, and my daughter cannot wait to get started!! What a beautiful way to preserve the "feminine arts"!
We recently received our order that included Sewing with Saint Anne. What a lovely book. Thank you so much for making it available to us. It is not often that you order a book and feel like the author has actually read your mind.

Nancy Nicholson is one of the founding authors of Catholic Heritage Curricula. Equipped with an abundance of God-given talent, a major in Secondary Education–English, and years of experience homeschooling her own children, she has written over thirty educational titles, beginning with Little Stories for Little Folks. Her unique ability to develop programs and workbooks that “fit” both advanced and struggling students is due to her experience raising children of different ability levels and learning styles: two of her children are developmentally challenged, while another went on to graduate from Harvard and is now a college professor.

We just wanted to say thank you for publishing the wonderful book God's Love Story. It is the first book our daughter reaches for when it comes time for homeschool lessons. It is a perfect blending of the richness of our Catholic faith and art. The illustrations are beautifully done and look so nice after we are done coloring them in each day. We are thoroughly enjoying the Poor Clares' book. Thank you again!

Photo submitted by Kara, MO.

We especially like God's Love Story. My son wanted to read the whole thing in one sitting!

Photo submitted by Jenna, MN.

I love how God's Love Story follows the Liturgical Year. It is always great when a child turns to me during Mass and mouths, "We learned about that." It's just one of those first little ways that my child realizes he can participate in the Mass. The artwork is beautiful, it is simple enough for a child to desire to color, yet allows space for a child to add to the picture (as my son has done many times this year) and make the book their own. One lesson is never enough, he's always begging for one more lesson.

Art Masterpieces: ABC Collection consists of 26 full-color Art Cards and an accompanying Teaching Booklet with detailed picture studies. The paintings have been chosen with the goal of instilling in a child an interest in beauty, composition, color, and line. The glossy, high quality art cards are printed on thick cardstock and are sized for small hands to study and manipulate. To complement the other topics a child is learning at this age, the art cards and picture studies reinforce the alphabet, colors, shapes, and numbers.

This collection of art masterpieces features 26 paintings by artists such as Sargent, Renoir, and Hokusai, each paired with a letter of the alphabet. The accompanying Booklet helps children learn the alphabet, colors, shapes, and numbers while learning to enjoy great art. The ABC Collection, composed of Art Prints and a Teaching Booklet, features:

  • 26 glossy, high quality art cards, printed on thick cardstock and sized for small hands
  • Each painting is paired visually or by subject with a letter of the alphabet
  • 26 detailed picture studies teaching:
    • Close observation skills
    • The alphabet, colors, shapes, and numbers
    • A deeper understanding of beauty, composition, color, and line
  • Suggested Extension Activities to enrich each lesson

Why teach art appreciation?
The experience of beauty in art helps to form the mind and heart to pursue truth and goodness. As Prof. John Crosby has said, “the child who is raised to respond to the beautiful is thereby sensitized to all that is good and right and worthy.” Taking time to expose our children to great art gives them the opportunity “to contemplate the ray of beauty that strikes us to the quick, that almost ‘wounds’ us, and that invites us to rise toward God” (Benedict XVI).

Recommended for ages 4-6.

“Late have I loved You, O Beauty ever ancient, ever new!”  —St. Augustine

Ever Ancient, Ever New leads children to God by Benedict XVI’s “way of beauty.” Level 2 tells the “story of art” from the High Renaissance to the Modern era, paying special attention to how the art of each period was influenced by the religious and philosophical beliefs of the time. The first half of the book focuses on the magnificent art of the Baroque period, including a valuable discussion of the Council of Trent’s guidelines for sacred art. The second half summarizes the artistic movements after 1700 until the present, then concludes with a unit on American art during the 18th to 20th centuries.

Discussion of each artistic period is accompanied by:

  • Detailed picture studies of period masterpieces that teach students the “language of art”
  • A lesson in art theory with a focus on the principles of design (unity, variety, contrast, movement, proportion, emphasis, repetition, balance, and rhythm)

Art Pad 2 provides homeschool-friendly art projects that teach fine arts skills while reinforcing and complementing the lessons in art theory and history from the text. Art Pad 2 includes:

  • 36 weeks of easy-to-follow project instructions
  • Projects themed to match the textbook
  • Project templates on colored cardstock and artist’s paper
  • Clear lists of additional, easy-to-find supplies

Ever Ancient, Ever New, Level 2 teaches:

  • Art Appreciation: Over 90 picture studies of masterpieces such as Velazquez’ The Coronation of the Virgin, David’s The Oath of the Horatii, and Childe Hassam’s The Fourth of July.
  • Art Practice: Fine arts skills such as advanced human figure drawing, working with acrylic paints and oil pastels, still life drawings and paintings, extreme view and two-point linear perspective, crosshatching, contour drawings, grid drawings, using saturated and desaturated colors, creating regular and irregular rhythm, using exaggerated and arbitrary color, compositional skills, advanced painting skills, and more!

Bethany Pedersen, M.A., is a practicing artist with an M.A. in Theology. She wrote her master’s thesis on sacred art in the theology of Joseph Ratzinger (Benedict XVI). She believes that all great art points beyond itself to God, the source of all beauty. She taught art for first grade through high school at an independent Catholic school, has taught art history at the college level, and enjoys drawing and painting in her free time.

Q: What art supplies are required to complete the Art Pad projects?

A: You can view a full list of art supplies for Art Pad 2 on pages 2-4 of this link.

Q: Why study art appreciation?

A: One answer is that art appreciation is a matter of passing on our heritage as Catholics. The Catholic Church was the primary patron of the arts throughout most of Western History. Knowing about the Gothic Cathedrals, Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel ceiling, and Murillo’s Assumption is our children’s rightful inheritance.

The more fundamental answer, however, is that the experience of beauty in art helps to form the mind and heart for the pursuit of truth and goodness. Great art shapes the soul so that it feels at home with what is beautiful, true, and good. As Prof. John Crosby has said, “the child who is raised to respond to the beautiful is thereby sensitized to all that is good and right and worthy.” Ultimately, a person’s experience of beauty is an invitation from God—the source of all beauty—to seek that which is above.

This is why Benedict XVI speaks of art as “a door open onto the infinite, onto a beauty and a truth that go beyond the daily routine.” Taking time to expose our children to great art gives them the opportunity “to contemplate the ray of beauty that strikes us to the quick, that almost ‘wounds’ us, and that invites us to rise toward God” (Benedict XVI).

To make it easier for homeschooling families to include art appreciation in their curriculum, CHC has developed a two-level art program titled Ever Ancient Ever New. This program combines art history, art appreciation, art theory, and hands-on art practice.

The purpose of Ever Ancient Ever New is not merely to teach fine arts skills or develop a familiarity with famous artists, but still more to cultivate in children a sensitivity to beauty and to the way God speaks through art. The author, Bethany Pedersen, is a practicing artist with an M.A. in theology; she wrote her master’s thesis on sacred art in the theology of Joseph Ratzinger (Benedict XVI).

My daughter was exploring some churches in Rome with her father and older sister. They popped into a church and she was excited to see this Caravaggio. She remembered it from a lesson we did in Ever Ancient, Ever New, Level 2. She told them all about the composition and style of the painting. We are loving this art appreciation book!

Art projects from Ever Ancient, Ever New, Level 2. Photo submitted by Amy, NY.

The art courses by Bethany Pedersen are outstanding!!! The artwork that the students produced is amazing and simply by following the author's step by step instructions. I taught the class and I am not an artist but I never ran into any problems with the projects! That's saying a lot!

Art exhibit put on by Amy, NY, and her students. The artwork in the photo is from Ever Ancient, Ever New, Level 2.

We all learned so much over the 2 years and the course is appropriate for all ages!! The art exhibit was a lot of work but it was worth it to see the body of work they produced rather than stow them away in the flat file.
I am currently using this book with one of my high school sons. We are both enjoying the art history and he has surprised himself with the art projects that can be done alongside the chapters. Catholic art history, theory and practice all in one. I highly recommend this book!
I am grateful that this program includes both art technique and art appreciation, and all from a Catholic perspective. The fact that the program's author wrote her master's thesis on sacred art in the theology of Pope Benedict lends yet another attraction to the quality of this art curriculum.
Overall, the quality of the courses is remarkable. Excellent content, beautiful presentation, and practical design all make these top-notch art courses....

Many parents are concerned about the treatment of nudity in art history courses. I very much appreciate the approach taken in this course. A few nude artworks are included, but only strategic sections are visible.... Read full review here.

The Art Masterpieces Collections are my absolute favorite. I have not found anything else like these and I want to thank you for creating such a wonderful collection of classical art pieces. I love that the Art Prints are a large enough size to display around our home, even just for fun! They are high quality printings on sturdy paper, I love the way the lessons have the students search for matching prints so that they get an eye for style.
